Rich Heritage, Bright Future
The Comox Valley has been home to the K’ómoks First Nation for thousands of years. European settlers arrived in the 1860s, drawn by the region’s fertile farmland and rich coal deposits. Cumberland became one of British Columbia’s most important coal mining towns, attracting workers from around the world — Chinese, Japanese, and European immigrants — creating one of the most diverse communities on Vancouver Island.
Today, the Valley celebrates this heritage through its museums, galleries, and cultural events while growing as a premier tourism destination. The region is known for its commitment to sustainability, local food systems, and preserving the natural environment that makes this place so special.
